Zoom – 20 sessions

Feb 1 – April 10

Xingyi Quan (Form and Intention Fist) is the most esoteric (perhaps the oldest) of the three main internal martial arts. It is a direct and practical style that uses whole-body movement to deliver powerful short-range strikes. At its core are the five fist techniques associated with the Five Elements of Chinese cosmological theory: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, known collectively as the “Mother Fists,” make up the building blocks of all Xingyi techniques. Five Elements practice develops physical integration of power, using the joints of the body as mechanical gears to transfer kinetic force through the fists and to their target.

In this class, William Bentley, our teacher-in-training, will teach the core foundational practices of the Five Elements of Xingyiquan: post-standing (standing meditation), movement patterns, techniques, and basic tactical applications. The goal is to learn and internalize proper body mechanics, structural alignment, timing, opening, turning, and closing, and the synchronization of footwork with the Five Element pathways of force: Pi (Chopping), Beng (Crushing), Zuan (Drilling), Pao (Cannon) and Heng (Crossing). A portion of the class will be devoted to the basic Five element theory and the practical health-building benefits of Xingyi Quan.
